Building a safe and secure embedded world

Optimizing energy use

In the embedded world, energy efficiency generally entails reducing electricity consumption, which applies not only to small battery-powered applications, but also to larger systems requiring high performance with minimum use of energy. This makes it crucial to identify savings potential and to carry out optimizations.

Within the embedded field, true power-saving experts can be found among the modern microcontroller families, but even the most economical microcontrollers require a power supply and should therefore only be activated when really necessary. Standby mode often uses more electricity than when the product is in operation, and if particular software sequences require an unnecessarily high level of electricity, the microcontroller savings potential is quickly nullified.

For this reason, it is recommended to lay the foundations for energy optimization when designing the device, in order to analyze the total power consumption and its distribution at an early stage of development. This also allows code optimization to be carried out in line with low-power controllers and an actual reduction in consumption can be achieved.

In the form of PowerScale, Hitex has created a development tool to reduce energy consumption, which was presented with the highly-regarded embedded AWARD in 2010.

Hitex has the relevant expertise and can use the proper methods to optimize and unlock the added potential of program sequences even at the design stage.
