SC410 PC/104 Windows®CE starter kit

Microsoft® Windows® CE, the first real-time operating system with an optional Windows® user interface, is being increasingly used in embedded systems. We support this with our starter kit for Windows® CE 3.0, which is ideally suited for use in embedded applications. The kit allows for a fast implementation of complete Windows® CE systems at the designer’s workplace. HiCO486ST-CE300 comes with the hardware adaption (OAL code) for the embedded PC HiCO486 and the pre-installed operating system on a bootable Flash disk. For the creation of Windows® CE based applications, the Microsoft® eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 are provided. A useful sample application completes the package.

Hardware
The kit is based on the HiCO486 PC/104 embedded industrial PC, fitted with the HiCOETS2 communications adaptor as the ethernet interface.

The HiCO486ST-CE300 starter kit comes with a floppy drive, a power supply plus several connection cables for the peripheral components and connection your existing Windows® NT® host. Monitor, mouse and keyboard are provided by the user. PC and floppy drive are shipped without the housing for easy installation at customer’s site. The flash disk already contains the Windows® CE kernel. In addition, comprehensive documentation is included.

Windows®CE Kernel
The modular design of the Windows®CE OS allows the embedded systems developer to customize it for a wide range of platforms. For maximum flexibility, the starter kit’s flash disk contains the full version which supports the following hardware peripherals:

* VGA display (320 x 240 up to 1024 x 768 pixels, 256 colors each)
* DRAM from 8 to 32MB
* Flash disk from 8 to 144MB
* Up to 2 hard disks
* Floppy disk
* COM1 to COM3
* IrDA as an alternative to COM1
* LPT1
* Keyboard
* Mouse, serial or PS/2
* TCP/IP

For commonly used applications, a selection of preconfigured Windows®CE kernels are supplied, which can be installed when required. As a Microsoft® Windows®CE preferred provider Hitex Automation also offers customized solutions for the most exacting requirements.

Sample Windows®CE Program. The supplied CD provides a sample program in the source code. This program is a terminal program and communicates via two serial ports.

SC410 PC/104 VenturCom ETS starter kit 1

VenturCom ETS is increasing becoming recognised as one of the only choices for serious hard real-time embedded operating systems. At the same time Hitex Automation's HiCO486 product is manufactured specifically for the industrial market. The two products therefore compliment each other perfectly and with these starter kits you get the best of hardware and software.

The kits require Microsoft's MSVC++ Visual C/VC++ Compiler v5 or v6 to build, run and debug real-time 32-bit embedded applications.

The ETS starter kit 1 allows user programs to be run from disc and RAM but does not include support for the GUI .

ETS Starter Kit Hardware:
The HiCO486 is based on the AMD Élan SC410 processor from AMD, featuring the high performance of a 486DX processor with reduced power consumption. The entire module consumes less than 3 Watts at 60MHz, and so ensures optimum operation up to +70oC without cooling. The device may even be operated at 100MHz, at a restricted operating temperature.

Other options include a 6.5" TFT display, Ethernet adapter and parallel debug cable for faster downloads.

After you have finished your design and you are ready to go into production Hitex can offer a design service to reduce the cost of the boards.

VenturCom's ETS kernel is a Windows-friendly RTOS combining the benefits of Windows development Tools with hard real-time performance. It provides a deterministic priority based scheduler and threads based multitasking. It has a scaleable kernel, which allows you to add features such as the GUI, TCP/IP stack, WEBserver, DLL loader and MSDOS compatible file system.
