At the core of an embedded system is the electronic hardware.  Playing host to the software, the two are tightly integrated and must be developed in consideration of co-dependencies and parallel requirements.  The hardware also provides an interface to the mechanical or physical world through sensors, displays, switches and many other electro-mechanical and human-interface devices.

Embedded systems must also be designed to survive their operational environment may that be harsh in temperature, humidity or vibration, as well as meeting strict regulations for EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility), ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) and other electronic characteristics.
